DON'T THROW AWAY THOSE OLD SPOOLS OF THREAD

Are old or faded spools of thread good to use when sewing? Many quilters inherit fabric and old spools of thread from their mother or grandmother. Many times those older spools just get thrown away, but there are other uses. First of all, conduct a strength test. Unravel a portion of the spool and with both hands, pull the thread to see if it easily breaks. If it easily breaks, it is not recommended for use in your machine. If you're not sure if maybe you pulled too hard on the thread, try it on a new spool of thread and you should see a difference. But if your basket of inherited thread or flea market threads all break easily, don't throw them away. One excellent use for older thread is for basting. Basting thread is cut and pulled out and thrown away, so why use your expensive thread for basting when you can use old spools of thread. A second use for old spools of thread is decorating your sewing room. Different colors of spools of thread can be glued to a wreath to add a colorful decoration to your sewing room.

Quality thread is extremely important when sewing, but older or poor quality threads can be used for basting or decorating.
